Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is one of the more common causes of discomfort after eating. During the initial interview with a patient, nearly half of them report some acid reflux. Many take over the counter medications. Others have noticed which foods cause them problems and avoid those foods. Finally, there are patients who want to be treated for this problem.

I have found that both acupuncture and Jin Shin Do work to help people with this problem. I was skeptical about Jin Shin Do as I think of it more for muscle pain and tightness. However I had a needle phobic woman who asked if that could help her. We tried it with her regular treatment and she reported a 75% decrease in her symptoms.

Acupuncture is typically stronger and more effective for this. In Chinese medicine, there are several reasons for acid reflux. The acupuncturist will take a full history and ask many questions about the patients particular symptoms as there are several factors that can be causing the problem on an energetic level. In order to treat the condition effectively the acupuncturist must know what started the problem and we do that by asking very specific questions about how the pain feels and where it’s located.

In most cases, something has gone awry with the patient and the organs of the middle body are not working properly together. The acupuncturist would say they need to harmonize the middle jiao. They do this by using needles and possibly some Chinese Herbal Medicine.

Most of my patients come in with acid reflux as only a secondary problem. However there is a new study out studying acupuncture and its efficacy on patients who have this as their major complaint. That study can be found here.
