Preparing for your First Visit

Patients should eat something before the first treatment, but not an overly heavy meal. It is also best to schedule a lighter meal for after the treatment. Acupuncture can drop blood sugar, so it is best to have something on your stomach before a treatment.

Patients are advised to not over exercise, engage in sexual activity or consume alcoholic beverages within 6 hours before or after the treatment.

Patients should plan their activities so that after the treatment they can get some rest, or at least not have to work very hard, particularly after the first few treatments.h

Prescription medication should be continued as prescribed by the doctor. Substance abuse of drugs or alcohol can interfere with the effectiveness of acupuncture treatments however.

It is helpful to prepare to keep good mental or written notes about any changes after each treatment, not only surrounding the main complaint but any changes within the body. Sometimes changes are subtle. If anything happens that concerns you as a patient, such as a problem seeming to get worse, it is always best to consult your practitioner.

Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing. Many practitioners offer gowns and covers but often patients find they are most comfortable in their own clothing.
